Flies – like any parasite – go for the weakest targets to get their food. Healthy cows aren’t so much of an attraction as those pumped full of antibiotics and hormones.

But we still have flies, which is a problem for us. Flies actually can decrease milk production, transmit disease, cause pinkeye, and irritate a cow’s udders. So even with fewer flies than ever before, we still would like to eliminate them all together.

Of course, we’re not the only ones, which is why the entomology department at North Carolina State came up with amazing invention – the fly sucker! You can see in the pictures that it blows and sucks the flies off the cows.

Organic Valley thought that this was such a great idea that they gave a research grant for NC State to test the effectiveness of the machine. And because we’re an Organic Valley farm (and maybe because George is an NC State graduate…), we were chosen to test it.

So far – we like it! We hope this is another way that organic farms can keep their animals even healthier. And it might be a way for traditional farm to reduce their dependence on harmful pesticides.

And that’s something that would be great for all of us!

So we were thrilled this winter to be featured in Edible Piedmont magazine! They did an great job telling about our history, how and why we became organic, and how we grew into having a feed mill.

They also shared a couple of fun farm facts that you may not know:

• Dairy farmers are paid only $16 for one hundred pounds a milk, and the price hasn’t changed much for the past 20 years!

• We once considered agritourism, inviting others to tour our farm – especially giving field trips for schools – as a way to keep the dairy viable.

• Before 1950, Reedy Fork Farm grew tobacco.

• It takes 500 cows to fill the Organic Valley milk truck. We’re a part of a ‘pool’ of farms, and we fill the milk truck every two days.

• Our cows produce milk for up to ten years. Before we became organic, they only gave milk for 4 or 5 years.

You can read the whole text of the article here.

Or better yet – subscribe to Edible Piedmont magazine and read the whole issue! There’s a fascinating article talking about the four young men who staged the sit in at Woolworth’s in 1960.

Edible Piedmont is a great publication with engaging articles about food from our area – as well as the people who cook, grow, and eat it!

We know, we’re not from Georgia, but we’ve heard many times that getting organic feed in Georgia is no easy task. We already regularly ship a truckload of feed to a coop there, and we wanted to get the word out and make a connection with others who need a certified organic product for their animals.

It was a great conference! First of all, Georgia is such a beautiful state, and the conference center was right on the Chattahoochee river. A train came right down the middle of the street where the convention was, and the food was good, too. But the conference is the people, and the people in Georgia were terrific.

We met lots of commercial organic farmers, with a variety of animals. There was a particular interest in our organic goat feed. As always, though, the backyard farmers needed chicken feed. We had lots of discussions on the various types of chicken rations we offer – starter, grower, soy free. The really fun part of the conference was that we got to meet several of our existing customers, including the one and only Daniel Dover, who organizes our Georgia shipment each month.

There were some wonderful seminars and classes at the conference, but you couldn’t prove it by us, because we were too busy meeting customers and new friends. One of the people we met was Cameron Molberg of Coyote Creek Farm in Texas. Coyote Creek also has an organic feed mill, and it was great to compare notes and just make a friend with someone who knows the fun – and challenges – of having a mill like ours!

This is really a side note, but at the conference we began exploring the possibility of putting solar panels up at our dairy barn. These panels would help power the water heater, and would also help heat the milking parlor.

Thanks to all of you who visited us at the conference, and made us feel so welcome! We were struck by how much the organic and sustainable living movement has grown in Georgia since the last time we were there. We look forward to our next visit!

“From Our Fork to Yours”!

We love it, and we think it’s a great reflection of who we are and what we do.

The winning entry was sent in by a mom on behalf of her two sons – Andrei (age 11) and Dmitry (age 12). We think it’s really cool – and sort of significant – that the winning slogan was submitted by the next generation.

Thanks to all of you who sent in your creative ideas, voted, and helped to spread the word.

And Andrei and Dmitry – watch your mailbox, because you’re going to be getting a gift card!

Thanks again to all of you.

You don’t see so many Monarch butterflies in the Midwest United States as you did a few years ago. Why? Their primary food source – milkweed– has all but disappeared. A recent study published in the journal Insect Conservation and Diversity cites the increased use of GM Roundup Ready corn and soybeans as the culprit.

For the past 17 years, butterfly populations have steadily declined as the usage of GM corn and soy crops has increased. In 2007, commercial farmers spread 185 million pounds of glyphosate herbicide over their crops – that’s 5 times the amount used in 1997.

How does a GM plant work? A genetically modified plant is actually classified and registered as a pesticide with the Environmental Protection Agency. Genes are inserted into the plant to change its molecular structure so that every cell of the plant produces a pesticide. Once an insect bites and swallows part of the GM plant, poison literally splits open its stomach and kills it.

Recent studies show that declining Monarch butterfly populations aren’t the only adverse effects of GM use. Malformations, birth defects in animals, cancer, genetic damage and other serious effects have been linked to low doses of glyphosate herbicide (AKA Roundup Ready) use.

Is there a better way? As a customer, you have more power than you realize. Of course, organic offers a better way. Every time you choose an organic product, you are saying “no, thank you” to genetically modified crops and “yes, please” to biodiversity.

Like all organic farms, Reedy Fork Organic Dairy Farm never relies on genetically modified anything. When you buy Reedy Fork organic dairy products or feed, you choose quality for yourself and a better world for the next generation. So drink your milk. Have another delicious serving of delicious yogurt or cheese. Organic choices add up and truly make a huge difference.

And we’d like your help! We’ve decided to have a contest, and let you submit your ideas to us. We’ll collect all the entries, take our pick of the top ten, then open it up and let all of you vote for the best one.

5. Entries must be received by midnight on February 15th.
