An Apple a Day. How would you feel about that organic apple if you knew that it may contain two to three times the antioxidants of a conventionally produced apple? How cool is that?
Recent research by an international team from Newcastle University in the UK compared organic and conventional crops and concluded that organic produce contains up to 60% more antioxidants than conventionally grown.
At the end of the day, a person who’s eaten organic fruits and veggies may have gotten the nutritional value of an extra one or two more servings of healthy produce.
Not So Heavy Metal. More good news is that organic produce is lower in toxic heavy metals. Specifically Newcastle scientists found that organic produce contained up to 50% less cadmium than conventional produce. Cadmium has been identified by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of the 275 most hazardous substances on Earth with chronic exposure through food being linked to kidney damage, lung damage and autism.
Significantly lower levels of pesticide and herbicide residues are more good reasons why you can be glad you choose organic products. Conventionally grown produce can often contain up to four times more residue than organic.
Lower Your Risk. Norwegian researchers found specific benefits for pregnant consumers of organic vegetables. Pregnant women who added organic vegetables to their diet may lower their risk for pre-eclampsia by 21%. This deadly complication can occur in the later stages of pregnancy and is indicated by high blood pressure and blood in the urine.
And There’s More…Other benefits for these nutritionally-minded moms are lower exposure to pesticides, higher intake of protective plant compounds (like antioxidants) and an increased supply of beneficial gut microbes.
